The 4th Annual Watertown Juneteenth Celebration

Event will be held at the Savory Ballroom in the Watertown Best Western on 300 Washington St. Watertown, NY 13601 from 12pm - 5pm. This year's guest speaker is Mr. Hari Jones, historian/ lecturer who curated the permanent exhibit of the African American Civil War Museum in Washington D.C. Other guests include members of Roc Bottom Poetry Slam team of Rochester, NY and Brownskin Band, R&B group from Syracuse NY. Members of the Fort Drum and civilian community were invited and auditioned to showcase their own talents in the various performing arts as well during the program. This event was named after the Founder of Juneteenth Celebrations In The Orange County New York Area. The Late Ms Laura Lanier was an Air Force Veteran who introduced Juneteenth to the area by having a celebration at St. Marks Baptist Church In Historic Highland Falls New York in 2003. The legacy of Ms Lanier's work was rescuerected by another Veteran of military service, and native of Highland Falls upon his retirement from the US Army in 2014. Command Sergeant Major Retired Saeed A. Mustafa established the newly named Festival In 2016 with a committee which comprised members from all over Orange County New York. The 2016 Festival was recognized by New York Assemblyman James Skoufis with a formal proclamation; and additionally recognized by Orange County Legislator Chris Echus. The 2017 Juneteenth celebration will ibegin on Saturday June 24th and nclude a parade down Main Street; a flag raising ceremony; a 3 on 3 basketball tournament; a outdoor concert , and conclude on Sunday with a Gospel concert at the park. There Year is much more enthusiasm by the community at large and the local news paper has already run an article about the upcoming festival.
