Juneteenth in October?

Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in America, commemorating the day in 1865 that Union generals told Texas slaves they were finally free. The announcement on June 19 came more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and has spawned the musical celebration known as Juneteenth Jazz.

Tonight, Oct. 25, the inaugural Oregon Juneteenth Jazz and Heritage Concert honors Portland rreisdent Clara Peoples as the "Mother of Juneteenth" and noted jazz drummer Ron Steen in a 7 p.m. show at the Red Lion Hotel Portland Convention Center, 1021 NE Grand Ave.

Along with Ora Lee Green, Peoples is credited with starting Portland's Juneteenth celebration in a park across from the Lloyd Center mall in 1972.

Read more about the concert on My Portland, a public blog where community groups, nonprofits and businesses can post their news, photos and videos.
