President Bush & Senator Kerry Refuse to Address Juneteenth Issues

(Washington, DC) - Juneteenth, considered America's 2nd Independence Day, continues to be ignored by George Bush and John Kerry. Rev. Ronald V. Myers, Sr., M.D., Chairman of the National Juneteenth Holiday Campaign and the WASHINGTON JUNETEENTH National Holiday Observance, is concerned about the lack of attention given to Juneteenth by both candidates.

"By refusing to personally acknowledge the importance of Juneteenth in America, George Bush, the former Governor of Texas, where Juneteenth is a paid state holiday and John Kerry, who claims to be in touch with issues concerning African-Americans, are both revealing how out of touch they are with this pivotal issue," states Rev., Dr. Myers, also Chairman of the National Juneteenth Christian Leadership Council, sponsors of the Juneteenth National Day of Reconciliation Healing From the Legacy of Slavery and host of the National Juneteenth Black Holocaust "Maafa" Memorial Service.

Juneteenth, the "19th of June", commemorates the day when slaves in the last geographic area in America where slavery was still practiced learned of their freedom on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas. It was then that Union General Gordon Granger announced that "all slaves are free" by reading General Order #3, reflecting on the Emancipation Proclamation that was issued by executive order by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. It took over two and a half years for the news to travel to Texas, in the Southwest region of the country.

"Juneteenth was recognized as America's 2nd Independence Day by the Congress of the United States through the passage of Senate Joint Resolution 11 and House Joint Resolution 56 in 1997. Thanks to our National Juneteenth Holiday Campaign, fifteen states, most recently New York, recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday or state holiday observance with many more states soon to pass similar legislation," states Rev., Dr. Myers. "America needs to address the truth concerning the legacy of slavery so that we can all move forward as Americans toward racial reconciliation and healing. George Bush and John Kerry apparently do not want to discuss Juneteenth or any issues centered on the legacy of slavery in America."
