President Bush and National Media Ignore
the Significance of Juneteenth in Ameirica

(Washington, DC) - President Bush returns from Africa with yet another invitation to personally acknowledge the end of slavery in America through participation in the annual WASHINGTON JUNETEENTH National Holiday Observance. "We continue to pray that President Bush will lead the nation toward healing from the legacy of slavery," states Rev. Ronald V. Myers, Sr., M.D., Chairman of the National Juneteenth Holiday Campaign and the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation (NJOF). "We hope that President Bush will take the opportunity that the annual observance of Juneteenth affords him to address the nation concerning the slavery issue in America on the '19th of June'. The leadership of the 'Modern Juneteenth Movement' in America stands willing to work with him."

Juneteenth, the "19th of June", commemorates the day when slaves in the last geographic area in America where slavery was still practiced learned of their freedom on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas. It was then that Union General Gordon Granger announced that "all slaves are free" by reading General Order #3, reflecting on the Emancipation Proclamation that was issued by executive order by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. It took over two and a half years for the news to travel to Texas, in the southwest region of the country.

Juneteenth was recognized as America's 2nd Independence Day by the Congress of the United States through the passage of Senate Joint Resolution 11 and House Joint Resolution 56 in 1997. Thirteen states, most recently New Jersey and now the District of Columbia, recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday or state holiday observance with many more states soon to pass similar legislation.

"Thousands of petitions requesting President Bush to issue a Presidential Proclamation to establish Juneteenth as a National Holiday Observance have been sent to the White House," states Rev. Myers. "Thousands are anticipated to return to the nation's capitol on Saturday, the '19th of June', 2004 for the 5th Annual WASHINGTON JUNETEENTH 2004 National Holiday Observance at the Lincoln Memorial and the U.S. Capitol to urge President Bush to join Congress in the recognition of Juneteenth Independence Day in America."

A recent column in the New York Times, concerning President Bush's statement about slavery during his last trip to Africa:

"Though it might have seemed perplexing - not least to the Senegalese - that America's leaders need to go to another continent in order to address an issue rooted so deeply in our own history, that geographic awkwardness speaks volumes about the odd place that slavery currently occupies in American culture and memory. Despite the frequent attention given to the subject, slavery is still somehow held an arm's length, or even an ocean's breadth, away." (New York Times - Week In Review by Adam Goodheart - 7/14/03)

"National media continues to ignore Juneteenth and its' unmistakably importance to American history," states Rev., Dr. Myers, also Chairman of the National Juneteenth Christian Leadership Council (NJCLC), sponsors of the National Juneteenth Day of Reconciliation and Healing From the Legacy of Slavery and the National Juneteenth Black Holocaust "Maafa" Memorial Service in Washington, DC. "Great attention has been given to the tragedy of 9/11, but mention of the June 1st anniversary of the worst terrorist event in modern U.S. history, the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921, continues to be ignored by President Bush and the national media."

July 11, 2003

The Honorable George Bush
President
United States of America
The White House
Washington, DC 20501

Dear Mr. President:

The National Juneteenth Christian Leadership Council (NJCLC) will be hosting our 3rd Annual National Juneteenth Black Holocaust "Maafa" Memorial Service, on Saturday, the "19th of June", 2004, beginning at 11:30am, at the White House Ellipse, in Washington, DC. As the leader of our nation, we again, as in the previous years, invite your participation in our Memorial Service through addressing those in attendance. Our country needs healing from the legacy of slavery and your participation in our service will be an important part of that healing process for all Americans.

Your recent comments concerning slavery during your trip to Africa were thought provoking. However, we need your acknowledgment of America's history of slavery through participation in the annual WASHINGTON JUNETEENTH National Holiday Observance.

I continue to prayerfully encourage you to lead the nation toward racial reconciliation and healing through your participation in the annual National Juneteenth Black Holocaust "Maafa" Memorial Service, the National Day of Reconciliation and Healing From the Legacy of Slavery, establishment of a Presidential National Juneteenth Commission, the issuing of a Presidential Proclamation establishing Juneteenth Independence Day as a National Holiday Observance and by addressing the nation during Juneteenth Independence Day from the White House each year.

Mr. President, as in previous years during your term in office, we pray that you will lead the nation toward true racial reconciliation and healing through the acknowledgment of the end of slavery in America.

In Christ's Love,

Rev. Ronald V. Myers, Sr., M.D.
Founder & Chairman
National Juneteenth Christian Leadership Council (NJCLC)
